If tomorrow’s Travis Scott SB and April’s Dior Jordan 1 are indicative of anything, it’s that collaborations drive hype. Sometimes, brands attach high-profile names to models in order for their popularity to trickle down to general releases (see: UNDERCOVER React Presto). By contrast, silhouettes like the Air Jordan 4 and adidas Superstar, both of whom are cemented in the sneaker pantheon, have collaborated with others for different purposes. The former follows-up the story-driven Off-White Jordan 5 with more air quotes courtesy of Virgil Abloh, while the timeless shell-toe goes all-the-way luxe thanks to Prada. Collaborations have even served as the conduit through which a sneaker from yesteryear can be introduced to a new crowd, recently done by Aimé Leon Dore and New Balance. And though poised to be a blockbuster year for joint-efforts, 2020 also promises impressive solo endeavors from the biggest players in the sneaker space. Fan-favorites like the Jordan 13 and Jordan 1 are slated to release in OG and retro colorways alike. Silhouettes like the Air Max 2090 borrow familiar DNA to proffer a glimpse into the future. And then there’s Yeezy, which is creating a legacy of its own.
